The handing over ceremony which was held at the state-of-the-art Chandaria Centre for Performing Arts was presided over by the Chairman of Council, Dr. Idle Farah. Upon receiving the key to the University Towers, Dr. Farah thanked all those who have contributed to the successful completion of the building. Dr. Farah was accompanied by other members of Council.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Peter Mbithi said that the building provides the much needed space the University needs to run its programmes. The Towers can hold up to 3,500 students at the same time. He said that the Towers will accommodate increasing academic activities and administrative services. The facility will be a place where users shall be proud to undertake world-class scholarly work, receive global leaders, scholars, the private sector, as well as other prominent guests.

Waweru and Associates, the lead consultants, made a presentation on the architecture of the building. Speaking on behalf of the firm, Mr. Waweru Gathecha, the project architect, gave an overview of some of the features of the magnificent tower. The University of Nairobi Towers is expected to be an inspiring and attractive show case of “green” buildings and once realized, the final facility should attain signature status in all aspects of cutting-edge architecture.

The 22-storey building will not only provide the much-needed teaching space but also assert and affirm the position of the University of Nairobi as the leader of architectural thought, innovation and champion towards the provision of environmentally friendly-solutions.
